HalfLytely BOWEL PREP

Day Before Procedure: CLEAR LIQUID DIET (all day)
  • Water

  • Juice (without pulp) such as apple, white grape or Gatorade

  • Soft drinks – such as Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite (no red or purple)

  • Coffee & Tea – with or without sugar or sugar substitute and non-dairy creamer

  • Popsicles & Jell-o (no red or purple)

  • Chicken broth & Beef broth

YOU MAY NOT HAVE

  • Dairy products

  • Red or purple products (all other colors are acceptable)

  • Pulp juices such as orange juice or tomato juice

12:00 NOON

  • Take all (4) bisacodyl tablets with water.

  • Do NOT chew or crush.

  • Do not take the bisacodyl tablets within 1 hour of taking an antacid.

1:00 PM

  • Add lukewarm drinking water to top of line on the jug of HalfLytely.

  • Cap jug and shake to dissolve powder.

  • The reconstituted solution will be clear and colorless. Use within 48 hours. Do not add anything else, such as flavorings, to the solution.

WAIT FOR BOWEL MOVEMENT

  • After a bowel movement occurs (usually in 1 to 6 hours), begin to drink the solution.

  • If bowel movement has not occurred after 6 hours, begin to drink the solution.

AFTER A BOWEL MOVEMENT

  • Drink 1 (8oz.) glass of solution every 10 to 15 minutes. Drink each glass quickly rather than drinking small amounts continuously.

  • Be sure to drink ALL of the solution.


NOTE

  • If you have severe discomfort or distention (bloating), stop drinking the solution for a while or wait longer between drinking each glass until the discomfort goes away.

  • Do not take any other medicines within 1 hour of starting to drink the solution.

  • Nausea, cramping and abdominal fullness are the most common adverse reactions.
